Brief History
Diaspora Girls’ Senior High School, has over the years had a change in name since it was established. The School, initially known as Nsaba Diaspora Community Secondary, changed its name to Nsaba Diaspora Girls Senior High School and finally Diaspora Girls’ Senior High School. The School was founded by the Forum of African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Ghana Chapter, a Non- Governmental Organization, in September 2002. FAWE Ghana established a Vocational Training Centre in Accra to provide skills to girls in the area of Batik Tie and Dye and Sewing. They relocated the Vocational Training Centre to Fotobi when the FAWE Fm was also established in the same community.
At the request of the chiefs and elders of Obodan, a village in the Nsaba Educational Circuit in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region, for Secondary education for girls at Obodan and its environs, FAWE thought it prudent to establish the Skills and Vocational Training School for girls. Through the visionary leadership of FAWE Ghana Chapter’s Founder and Coordinator, the late Mrs. Vida Amaadi Yeboah, funding was sought and obtained from Rockefeller Foundation and Friends of FAWE in the Diaspora, for the establishment of the school. Twenty – two (22) students enrolled when admissions were opened. These enrolled students were provided with a year of pre – Senior Secondary Training before commencing with their three year training programme. Land for the School was given by three individuals, Obaapanyin Abena Dede (who gave the biggest portion of the land), Obaapanyin Akua Agyan and Opanyin Asamoah at no cost. The first contractor to lay foundation and raise the first block of the school was Mrs. Nancy Owusu.
The first three (3) cohorts of students that entered the school enjoyed full scholarship from first year to the end of their course and received transport allowance to cover their transportation to and from school during the holidays. School fees payment was introduced in 2005 after Rockefeller had shifted its focus from girls’ education to the environment.
The School’s history cannot be laid bare without noting the following individuals: Dr. Katherine Namuddu – Executive Director of Rockefeller Foundation; Mrs. Ernestina Naana Hagan – Founding Member of FAWE Ghana and legal advisor of the Chapter; Dr. Rosina Acheampong - Member and Former Director of Ghana Education Service; Mrs Theodora Daaku – Founding Member and first Chairperson of FAWE Ghana; Mrs. Camilla Haldane–Lutterodt – Founding Member and former Chairperson of FAWE Ghana and Prof. Esi Sutherland Addy, Founding Member and Chairperson of FAWE, the Felder Family and friends of New Jersey as well as Mr. Richard Amoani who has been very instrumental and supportive role in the operations of FAWE Ghana and the school as a whole.
The school was fashioned initially to fully operate as a day school but later in 2004, there was the need to extend access to girls beyond the environs of Obodan. This necessitated the provision of boarding facilities for the school.
With assistance from various partners and collaborators, mostly from outside Ghana, the first Boarding House, Dr. Katherine Namuddu House, with adequate boarding facilities for sixty – five (65) students as commissioned on 24th June, 2005.
By September 2005, the school had a the full complement of the stream of Senior Secondary School as it was given recognition by the Ghana Education Service in March 2005.
The school started with Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles) and General Arts was introduced in 2005, which increased the enrolment of the students significantly. By the end of the 2006/2007 academic year, the population stood at 101, with 33 of the students from the catchment area.
Notwithstanding the numerous challenges that the Chapter was faced with, especially after the shifting of the focus of its main sponsor, Rockefeller Foundation and the demise of the founder and co-ordinator, which sadly occurred in 2006, the then Interim Management and Administration Team (IMDT), partner, collaborators and committed friends of FAWE were poised not only to continue the remarkable work started, but also to develop the school further. Mrs Juliana Osei, who succeeded the late Vida Amaadi as Coordinator of FAWE Ghana doubled as the Head of the School from 2006 to 2009.
A number of measures were initiated to improve enrolment. One key intervention strategy was the organisation of free extra tuition for students in Junior Secondary Schools in the Nsaba Educational Circuit. The purpose of this move was to enable more students pass the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to qualify to enter the school as envisioned by the founder and the Chief and elders of Obodan community.
Due to the great financial constraint imposed on the school as a result of the shift in focus of the Rockefeller Foundation, the school begun the process of being absorbed into the Public School System. Mrs. Ewurabena Ahwoi, played an pivotal role in the process and finally on 14th September 2009, the school was absorbed into the public school system as a Public Boarding / Day School on. The total enrolment at the end of the 2010/11 academic year stood at 232, comprising 173 Boarders and 59 Day students. Home Economics (Food option) was introduced during the 2010/11 academic year. Business Programme was subsequently introduced in 2012/13 with five (5) students. As the years went by, the Visual Arts programme was also established during the 2014/2015 academic year with three (3) students. All these programmes were introduced under the leadership of Mrs Emilia Amerley Quarcoo (Headmistress).
As part of the Nation’s educational policy to encourage girl child education and in fulfilment of the Government of Ghana’s agenda of driving economic development through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, the school, under the leaderships of Ms Beatrice Hehetror (Former Headmistress) started the procedure for running the General Science Programme which was continued by Mrs. Ama Thompson (Headmistress). Approval to run the General Science Programme was given and the programme commenced on 15th September 2019 with thirteen (13) students. The Headmistress, Mrs Ama Thompson saw to the refurbishment of two rooms, which is now being used as Chemistry/Physics laboratories as well as storage rooms for science instruments and chemicals to augment the already existing Biology Laboratory.
